Say what you will about Foo Fighter's Sonic Highways but the band IMHO gets better with each album. Their HBO special is a good primer for each city profiled- by no means is it a complete picture- but it's a nice starter for a world that is growing increasingly away from it's musical roots. In terms of musical roots, cities like Detroit are yielding gems such as Jessica Hernandez & the Deltas and Orange County's jazzy singer Nancy Sanchez. Aside from emerging artists, there are legends and legacies like Flaco Jimenez & Max Baca (who should've been nominated for a Grammy), John Garcia (Kyuss and Unida) one of my all-time fav vocalists with his best riffs since Kyuss, and the blazing rock duo that is Royal Blood wth their electric guitar like sounding bass.

The cuties of Cutty Flam (San Fernando Valley) kept my robot heart beating this year with their quirky videos on Youtube, Ritchie Valens goes prom-punk gigs and of course their Robot Heart cassette release on Burger Records! And speaking of hearts of steel, the soundtrack to my millenial quarter life crisis is Lykke Li's I Never Learn. Then there's The Bloodhounds, East L.A.'s answer to the Yardbirds. They originally won me over with a Thee Midniters cover set and they've done it again, this time, with their own album Let Loose! on Alive Natural Sound. And in a genre all their own are Thee Commons, whose perfect blend of psychedelic cumbia punk can be heard throughout East Los and beyond...
